Blog Post Drought Over!

April 3rd, 2010 ·

Hi All,

Spring is here & the blog post drought is over. My apologies…I hope you all had a great winter. It’s been beautiful here in Cardiff lately. Beach isn’t too crowded – surf has been fun. Although I haven’t had much time to get in the water – I’ve been really busy with Roy’s & also coaching baseball at UCSD (more on that below).

We’ve brought in a few new items now available in the e-Cabana @ www.shop.royscabana.com.

By popular demand, we’ve brought back the Gumu Reef hoodie (Gumu Reef II) with some minor changes from the original, mainly the liner has changed from satin to cotton jersey – but it still has a cool Ron Stoner image. Available in Gunmetal Grey and Stone.

BTW there are a few originals left so get ‘em while you can!

Since MLB Opening Day is tomorrow, seems appropriate to get some baseball into to this some how…..

As I mentioned above, I’m also one of the Assistant Coaches at UCSD – 6th year now!  It’s been a great season so far – we’re 29-4 going into today’s doubleheader and ranked #1 in the nation in Division II! This is a special club – we finished 3rd in NCAA DII last season & off to the best start in school history this year. So I’ll be busy with that for the next 2 months – in addition to writing on what’s happening with Roy’s & what’s happening on & around the beach. Anyone interested in following our quest for a CCAA, West Regional and possibly an NCAA D II title – you can follow UCSD Tritons Baseball at the following link :

http://www.ucsdtritons.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=5800&KEY=&SPID=2331&SPSID=29805

You can also find one of the few pictures in existence of me in a coat & tie – good thing it was a head shot cuz I was also wearing Roy’s boardshorts & flip flops…..

Anyway, this is has the makings of great weekend!…. A noon doublehearder @ UCSD, Final 4 hoops later in the day, a dawn patrol surf session scheduled Sunday morning followed by Easter brunch & then MLB Opening Day –  Red Sox vs Yankees in the evening! Better than that? I don’t think so!

Happy Easter Everybody!

Check out this hot new line that has hit the beach here in So Cal!

December 28th, 2009 ·

I wanted to get this up before Christmas, but I was over in China visiting one of our factories until the 22nd checking on some new fleece that we have coming in February – so my apologies. Wrote this while waiting for the flight home in Guangzhou. Enjoy!

- Tom

Poerava

My friends, Brett & Chieko have launched a very cool & original line called Poerava, which means black pearl in Tahatian.poerava-page

Between sets on a recent surf trip to Tahiti last February, they ran into an old friend of Cheiko’s from Japan who had started a black pearl farm several years before. One thing lead to another….the idea light bulb then began flashing and within a few weeks of returning to San Clemente, Poerava was born!

r7-This is very cool & fresh. There’s really nothing out there like it & you can only find it online. Each piece is carefully hand crafted and truly reflects the ocean and beach lifestyle. Poerava makes great gifts & also looks great with Roy’s gear – whether it’s our surf apparel or fleece!

Check it out – www.poerava.net

Roy’s Tours the German Skies!

December 8th, 2009 ·

Hey Guys,

Just got an email from a friend of mine who is traveling Europe right now. He had the opportunity to go on a helicopter ride and tour Southern Germany. He was wearing Roy’s at the time and happened to make a short video of the experience. I’ve attached his email with the video link – check it out.

More Later,

Tom

Hey Tom,

I am in Europe right now having a great time. Just recently I was in Stuttgart, Germany. My friend was looking at buying a helicopter, the seller was kind enough to give us a ride. It is freezing cold here. Nothing like the temperate winters I’ve gotten used to in California. Anyways I was worried I was going to freeze, but actually my Roy’s sweatshirt kept me plenty warm and went with me along for the ride. I got a video of the experience. I just thought it would be a good post for the blog, because I am trying to wear this stuff as much as possible and spread the word about Roy’s.

I am sorry if the video is shaky and hard to see sometimes. I literally had to shoot this with my iPhone. You will still get the idea.

Again Tom I am all behind you on what you are trying to do with Roy’s. Thanks so much for making a line of clothing that is of such high quality but also so comfortable to wear.

Talk Soon,

Matt Nugent

A friend of Roy’s – Pursuing a good cause!

November 24th, 2009 ·

I’d like to introduce all of you to an old friend of mine– Jeff Peterson. He’s doing some really great things that we’d like to share with you. This is a very compelling story and a noble & worthy cause. For more info or to get involved, please check out his website – www.petersonfamilyfoundation.org.

Jeff with his two sons

Jeff with his two sons

Roy’s: Jeff, tell us how you and Tom met, what has lead you to live the “beach lifestyle” and how you became a fan of Roy’s?

Jeff: Tom and I first met at U.C. Berkeley, where we played baseball for the Golden Bears. Since we were both from beach towns, we had a lot in common from the start. I learned how to surf in Santa Cruz, CA when I was 12 years old. I fell in love with the life style and ocean. Every time I went to surf, my adrenaline would pump up and I couldn’t wait to get in the water. After a couple hours of surfing, I would be energized for the rest of the day. I always thought that the original board shorts were Hang 10 and Quicksilver, but the original board shorts were created by Roy’s in 1952. I love history, and am so happy that Roy’ s’ has carried forward the great California surf tradition. The story of Roy’s is a mandatory read for all California surfers, no matter what age. This is the true “bitch’n” and “boss.” Roy’s apparel is the best line out there.

Roy’s: Thanks for the compliments. We’re having a lot of fun with what we’re doing with Roy’s. Tell us a little about your foundation – the story behind it & what your goals are.

Jeff: My wife Karen, who also shared a love for the ocean and the “lifestyle”, was taken by a rare form lung cancer in 2002. The mission of the Foundation is to seek out and support experts and institutions dedicated to enhancing and improving the lives of people afflicted by mesothelioma, pediatric diabetes and pediatric leukemia.

What was created was something to help inspire people and their family members to persevere during a health crisis.

Roy’s:
What would you like to see the Foundation involved in, in the future?

Jeff: The continued search for benevolent grants and charities, which would improve the quality of life for all affected by life altering health issues. Most importantly, bringing hope to those in need and offering advice to the care keepers and family members who are under tremendous stress who need to continue to have as much of a normal life as possible. The foundation is also getting more directly involved with research into diabetes, leukemia and lung cancer.

Roy’s: What has been the most rewarding part about starting this foundation?

Jeff: Seeing how we have positively affected and contributed to those who were needing support.

Roy’s: What is the most exciting or promising endeavor the Peterson Foundation is involved with?

Jeff:
The Foundation is very excited to have become a collaborative partner with Pinpoint Genomics. Genomics, the study of gene expression and function, can be used to develop clinically validated, individualized tumor profiles, which may greatly improve the quality of treatment decisions for patients with cancer.

Roy’s: What would you say to someone who is going through the same thing you went through, what words of wisdom can you offer to someone now that you wish someone had said to you in 2002?

Jeff:
Whether you have cancer, or are helping a loved one with the disease and its many side effects, I encourage you to make healing a top priority. Exercise daily, spend time with healthy, happy, positive people, watch funny movies, play with your dog, ride a horse, eat organic food and learn about herbs, vitamins and minerals. Find a good therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist. Don’t be afraid to ask about taking anti-depressants. They’ve helped millions of people and saved thousands of lives. Allow time for your loved ones to get away and to re-energize. Feeling that they have to be there all the time only creates exhaustion.

Roy’s: How has this process changed you as a person & your outlook on life?

Jeff: I’ve realized that no one is immortal, no matter what age. Life is fleeting. At any age, and at any time we can leave this world. There are so many distractions in this world; we all get caught up in the minutia of technology. Having a quality of life allows you to observe the time and live more in the present. “Don’t be anxious for tomorrow, let tomorrow be anxious for itself”

Roys: Thanks for sharing your story Jeff! This is truly a great cause. If anyone wants to get involved or contribute, please visit www.petersonfamilyfoundation.org the Foundation’s website at . To contact Jeff, click the “ Our Story” link or go to the contributions page to learn how to contribute.

Roy’s Past in the Sailing World!

October 27th, 2009 ·

Hey All,

Tom here with another letter from someone from Roy’s past. G.W. describes Roy’s and the quality construction of our clothes which could, and still can, stand up to just about anything. Roy’s impressed people so much that they have written us after over 40-50 years have passed. Read about G.W’s experience with Roy’s as he sailed  in the Malibu Outrigger as a kid, and experience Roy’s for yourself!

Roy’s ~ A California Original

Until Next Time,

Tom Signing Out.

British Virgin Islands

Tom,

Terry and I are currently sailing for a month in the BVI.  That is why my reply has been delayed. I have such fun memories of the late 50’s and early 60’s sailing my Malibu Outrigger off the beach at the Malibu Yacht Club.  I was born in 1945 so those early years were pre-teen thru my 20’s.  I had well over a dozen pair of shorts made at Roy’s over the years along with many others from the MYC. In order to fully understand the significance that Roy’s played in our club, you have to understand the sailing technique of the Malibu Outrigger.  It is an 18′ sailing outrigger boat with hiking boards that cover the area between the main hull and the alma (outrigger). The outrigger is on the starboard (right) side and when tacking the crew would have to slide on their butt over these boards.  The boards were covered with a non-skid coating that could wear thru a pair of shorts in a few weeks of sailing. IN COMES ROY’S CABANA  SHOP.  Roy’s would make shorts for us designed and engineered with double thickness butt cheek pads to withstand the sliding over the rough hiking boards.  I wish I still had some of the worn shorts.  There were always holes and shredded material hanging from the seat of my shorts but never did a bit of flesh get chaffed.

Now, I must admit that memories do get confused and often embellished in my stories but up until this part of my note all is perfectly intact.  Now let me add that somewhere in my memories we used to call some of these shorts JAMS.  Have you ever heard this reference?  We certainly look forward to your web site and blog.  Can’t wait to show off my new Tees.

Memory of Roy’s – A Satisfied Roy’s Customer from the Past..

October 20th, 2009 ·

Hey everyone,

I received an email recently from Ross in Huntington Beach. This guy was buying Roy’s in the early sixties and is excited for Roy’s comeback. I thought I would share his letter, and some of the pictures he sent of the vintage Roy’s board shorts.

Enjoy,

Tom

————————————

This past Friday, I saw the writeup on Roy’s Cabana in the business section of the Register.  It brought back some fond memories of growing up in Santa Monica, surfing with my friends and hanging out at the beach.  We all had surf trunks from Roy’s.

I still have a pair from the early sixties and thought you might enjoy seeing them so I’ve attached some snapshots – front, back and a closeup of the label.

IMG_0556

As you can see from the photos, they are tan duck with a three eyelet waistband, button fly (like Levi’s 501’s), the coin pocket in front and tIMG_0555he wax pocket in back.

Growing up in the 50’s probably explains why I still have them.  Back then, we tended to use things until they were completely used up and these never wore out so I’ve kept them in the back of my closet all these years.  Classic style, built to last, what else can I say.

Best regards and good luck with your new venture,

Welcome to Roy’s Blog!

October 14th, 2009 ·

Roy's Sign cropped

Welcome to Roy’s blog! We finally got this going!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Tom Colburn & my parents, Roy & Dody, started Roy’s Cabana in the 1952. Roy’s was located on the Pacific Coast Highway in the Santa Monica Canyon. You can check out some of the articles posted “In the Press” or check out “History” for the whole story at www.royscabana.com. While you’re at it – be sure to check out our on line “Cabana” shop.royscabana.com for some great deals on our products.

In a nutshell, here’s what Roy’s is all about….

I decided to re-launch my family’s business in 2005, after a breakfast with a friend at Swami’s Café in Encinitas, Calif. It was there in the parking lot of Swami’s that Roy’s was revived because we felt that much of the beach lifestyle that we were so fortunate to enjoy while growing up had essentially disappeared or morphed into something that had drastically strayed from it’s roots.  I set out to recapture some of the lost tradition and culture of the simpler, more carefree lifestyle that was at the core of what we now know as the “beach or surf lifestyle”.

I feel our concept resonates with those who identify with or actually experienced that time & place. Roy’s is a premium label of apparel that scribes a continuous traditional line from the birth of the California surf and beach culture through today and into the future. Roy’s is stylish, not fashionable, functional, not retro.

Gumu Reef

Gumu Reef

Roy’s helped create a tradition and we’re here to keep it as alive and as vital today as it was in 1952, when it was born.  Roy’s is real, from a real place and about a real culture and lifestyle.

Roy’s is more than just another clothing line. It’s about a lifestyle. Over the past 4 years I have had a fantastic time doing this. I’ve logged a lot of miles… been around the US, been to Hawaii several times, been to Australia several times, been to Puerto Rico & the Virgin Islands, even returned to my old stomping grounds in Italy after an 8 year absence & heading to Asia shortly – what a job! Just so happens I also get to check out some pretty cool beaches along the way. But more importantly, I’ve met a lot of great people along the way. I’ve received many emails & have been contacted by many friends & well wishers who had either experienced part of the Roy’s story in some way or they identified with the authenticity of our history and what it represented.

Through this blog we hope share many of these stories – past and present. So let’s have some fun with this! Please send in your comments or stories & pics. We’d love to hear from you!

More later…..

Cheers,

Tom

Roy’s Surf Apparel Has Finally Arrived In The Caribbean!

October 7th, 2009 ·

Guest Contributor:  Jim Walberg - The Bay Area Team

99-Jim-coming-out-water-209x300Old guys are still surfing – promise!  Jim Walberg just discovered that Roy’s Cabana has re-launched their board shorts and surfing apparel after 25 years.  Roy and Dody Colburn’s son, Tom Colburn, now heads the re-launching of the company his parents started in 1952.  It is now based in Cardiff, California  near San Diego with the surfing apparel available in the Caribbean by going on-line.  The Caribbean surfing community will love the clothing Roy’s is now ready to deliver!

Most of you know that I grew up in Redondo Beach and surfed all through the 1950’s and 1960’s before I discovered the Caribbean in 1975.  Growing up, Roy’s was my board shorts for over 20 years.  Roy’s started as a motel and café that was just across the road from the beach in Santa Monica.   Roy and Dody Colburn began their business in 1948 by serving meals all day and evening at the café next to their motel next to the beach.  As the surfing community of Southern California started to grow in Santa Monica they began hanging out at Roy’s Café when they were not in the water, lathering themselves with Baby Oil for the darkest tan possible, and playing volleyball.

After serving food to this crowd for four years, Roy noticed that the surfers were in need of something other than cut-off jeans or cut-off white surplus Navy pants.  What they needed was a durable board short that would make it through months of sun, big waves and hot sand.  Roy suggested that his wife, Dody start taking sewing and pattern classes so they could capitalize on this idea that he had.  In 1952 Dody created the first versions of Roy’s board shorts.  They opened a small store in 1956 right next to their motel/café and called it Roy’s Cabana.   They stocked it with very colorful bolts of canvas materials so a customer could actually pick the material for their own board shorts, or they could just buy from the racks of finished board shorts that Dody had already made.
